SANF4 phog masheeen audio and video up!

The recording of the phog masheeen performance and William Almas video have been fused together and are available on YouTube;

 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eFhIUZ-qkKs

And is available from the internet archive as well.

William's video is well presented, perhaps better presented than in the live setting. You be the judge.

One of the highlights of the Santa Ana noise festival was the opportunity for Emmy Collins and Lisa Black to be in the same room at the same time. Emmy and Lisa lent their voices to the characters of Entropy and Cold on the phog masheeen CD "The Eternal Battle of Heat and Cold." Emmy recorded his parts in Landers California and Lisa recorded her's in Costa Mesa. They had not met till the noise fest.

SANF4! Tiki Bar!

The Santa Ana Noise festival #4 was an unqualified success!
The recordings of the sets are here: http://archive.org/details/SantaAnaNoiseFestival4-Sanf4

Photos are here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/mixedmediaexpressions/sets/72157632210814185/

The gallery staff had been straitening the pictures all night long. By the end of the evening they had been vibrated to a new "level." Evidence of good sub-woofers.
A grand time was had by all. The Hall was great. Sound was great. Snacks were plentiful. It was all good.

This coming Friday I am performing with Big Enjoyers as bass guitar operator. It is their record release party. Free CDs to the first 50 guests.

What we are working on here at phog masheeen central and the Henry Rollins article...

Here at phog masheeen central we have a variety of irons in the fire.
Eric Strauss with two early versions of the Shambler,
William is building a DVD of performances featuring HD renditions of his hand crafted videos to be seen with actual recordings of the gigs. We are very excited about this and it documents the Tinnitus 2 Go series of shows. Included will be the Norcal Noisefest Set as well as MeowMeow's one stop Rock Shop. For these sets Eric Strauss was laying down swaths of sound with the Shambler. The Shambler being the sonic tool that Eric fabricated.

The DVD offers a way to see Bill's video they way they were intended. The projections at some of the venues were at best, sub-prime.

We are working on setting up gigs into 2013 and continue to promote the Eternal Battle of Heat and Cold.

On the gig front the next event is the Santa Ana Noise Fest on December 8th. This promises to be an epic night of experimental music. Fun and FREE! If you are in So-cal it is not to be missed!

On a different note, Eric Strauss tipped me to this:

Henry Rollins weighing in on the noise scene. I liked it.

The march toward SANF4 is in full swing. Here is a snip from the press release:

Santa Ana Noise Festival Returns December 8th 2012.

The Santa Ana Noise Fest (SANF 4) returns for its fourth installment to the Orange County Center for Contemporary Art at 117 North Sycamore, Santa Ana, CA 92701. Festivities begin at 5:00 PM on Saturday December 8th, 2012. This event is FREE!

This celebration of all things experimental, improvised, distorted and loud offers an opportunity for interested parties to test their earplugs with performances from: Brutal Poodle, Cold Grey Eye, Craig Sibley, +DOG+, Endometrium Cuntplow, Grizzly, Jesus Is Dead, phog masheeen, Six Mystic Points, Wire Here, XSXCXEXBX and Yard Goat.

A unique feature of the Santa Ana Noise Fest is the “Noise Circle” at the end of the event. This offers an opportunity for all the performers to play together blending their unique approaches to sound production into a swirling vortex of sound. The proximity of the date of the SANF 4 to the end of the Mayan Calendar prompted the promoters to suggest that the “Noise Circle” could be used in a ritual manner for “Opening a rift to the end of the world.”

Directions to the venue can be found at OCCCA.ORG.

Soundwalk 2012 recap, Monk notes...

Another festive Soundwalk has come and gone. Thanks to Ken Huntington for documenting my set in front of the Mystery Cave/Glow Room with this fine picture. I like the mobility aspect of being able to find interesting spots at interesting times. Andy Sykora was cruising the event on his bike and stopped to jam. We threw down in front of a metal gate (which was clearly marked "No Loitering" much to my delight!) things got interesting when we started playing the gate.

On a different note: I got this scan of notes from Thelonious Monk. It is part rant, part journal. I think it is interesting to see how much handwriting contributes to your knowledge of a personality. In Monk's case, print not cursive, underlining for emphasis.

Here is one you can check out. It is titled Henry Miller's in the House.
It is scored for voice, viola, cello, contra-bass,trumpet and percussion. It features a lovely Fixed Audio Track that highlights some confrontational commentary from Mr. Miller himself.

Palm Springs Museum, ongoning work...

Work has begun on the next CD from phog masheeen, titled "The Eternal Battle of Heat and Cold." So far we have had outstanding recording sessions with Bobby Almon from Liver Cancer and Emmy Collins from Brutal Poodle. Both Bobby and Emmy made brilliant contributions and thank you does not express our gratitude for their participation in the project. More work is underway and we are weaving in tracks from all of our different tools. The Pick-0-Phone and The Shambler being represented among them.

Unique to this production is the fact that William Almas is working in parallel with the audio recordings creating video content and his experiments are informing the audio production. There is some back and forth there.

On the performance front, phog masheeen will be performing at the Palm Springs Art Museum on March 11th as part of their free. Second Sunday series. They are running a great show that will still be up when we perform. Titled Backyard Oasis: The Swimming Pool in Southern California Photography, 1945-1982   We will be performing from 1:00 to 2:00 PM in the James and Jackie Lee Houston Atrium on March 11, 2012.
